Rare Civil War Confederate Griswold & Gunnison Revolver Based on the Colt Model 1851 Navy percussion revolver and manufactured by Samuel Griswold at his factory in Griswoldville, Georgia, c. 1863. Griswold revolvers were close copies of the Colt Model 1851 Navy with a distinctive brass frame and round Dragoon style barrel. This revolver has the "Second Model", part octagon, barrel lug. The brass frame lacks a capping channel. The cylinder has the distinctive twist lines that are characteristic of Griswold revolvers with six stops and safety pins between each chamber. The wedge, correctly, does not have a spring. The hammer has crude, hand-cut, knurling on the spur. The full serial number, "1675" is stamped on the cylinder and on the left side of the frame and barrel lug. The secondary or assembly number "25" is stamped on the loading lever, back strap, trigger guard, and wedge. The Roman numeral "XXII" is stamped on the inside of the back strap and trigger guard. This revolver is accompanied by a detailed, 13-page appraisal. The appraisal states: "In summary, this Civil War Confederate brass framed Griswold Revolver serial number 1675 was found to be all original and authentic in every regard and a 'very good' example of a standard production second model by this manufacturer." The Sexton description goes on to explain that due to the rarity of Confederate made handguns and extreme service wear that surviving Confederate revolvers typically display, this revolver is well above the average condition for a Confederate made handgun and should be considered in the equivalent of NRA "Very Good" condition. This is a superior example of a rare Civil War Confederate Griswold & Gunnison revolver in original condition. In addition to the serial numbers and markings previously described, the appraisal notes that the back strap, trigger guard, frame, bottom of the barrel and back of the cylinder are all stamped with the "cryptic" "AA" inspection mark found on Griswold revolvers. Griswold manufactured approximately 3,700 of these well-made revolvers for the Confederate government between 1862 and 1864. Collectors have identified about 350 surviving Griswold revolvers. This revolver is not listed by serial number on page 36 of "CONFEDERATE HANDGUNS" by William Albaugh. Manufacturer: Griswold & Gunnison Model: 1851 BBL: 7 1/2 Inch Stock: Gauge: 36 percussion Finish: blue/brass Grips: walnut Serial Number: 1675 Class: Antique Condition: Very good plus overall. The revolver is original and complete. The iron barrel, loading lever and cylinder have a dark brown, patina with scattered minor dents and handling marks and light to moderate pitting. The hammer is heavily flash-pitted and has a worn face. The brass frame, back strap and trigger guard have a deep, untouched patina with scattered patches of age discoloration. The one-piece walnut grip remains in good overall condition with one small chip in the bottom of the left heel.
