RARE ASH BURL COMMUNION CUP.
Native American, mid- 19th Century. In two pieces. Urn from top with pewter insert on a round stepped base. 15.75"h. 9.5"d. at bottom. 7.5"d. at top. Illustrated and discussed in "North American Burl Treen: Colonial & Native American" by Steven Powers (p. 89).

Cataloger's note: The choice of a burl, or more so wood, for the communion cup is a decidedly modest one. Typically, these cups are fashioned from silver or pewter. One hypothesis is that the piece may have been made and used by local Ojibwa Indians, who at the time were being converted to Christianity. As burl was symbolically a part of the body of the Ojibwa's grandparents, so Communion is symbolic of the body and blood of Jesus Christ. Two belief systems overlapping.

Provenance: Chester Lovett (Paris, Ontario); Henry Dobson (Plattsville, Ontario); Mr. & Mrs. Shute (Ottawa, Ontario).

  • Condition: Chipping to edge of base, red pigment residue on edge of base, visible crack on interior and exterior of wooden cup near rim, minor cracks at cup rim along grain. (BH 7.21.26)
