Broadway Broke is a 1923 American silent drama film directed by J. Searle Dawley. The plot follows a struggling, retired Broadway actress named Nellie Wayne who attempts to rescue her family from financial ruin and restart her career by turning to playwriting. The production featured an ensemble cast that notably blended contemporary actors with portrayals of historical figures from the theater world: Mary Carr as Nellie Wayne, Percy Marmont as Tom Kerrigan, Gladys Leslie as Mary Karger, Macklyn Arbuckle as P.T. Barnum, Leslie King as Mark Twain, Albert Phillips as General Grant, Frederick Burton as Augustin Daly. Standard Format: These cards were printed in the classic American 11" x 14" format on heavy paper. Aesthetic Style: True to early 1920's cinema advertising, they rely on rich photographic rotogravure enhanced with delicate hand-tinted coloring rather than full-color lithography. 1. The Title Card Design Focus: Serves as the master promotional piece for the set. Visuals: Features a prominent, hand-tinted central image of lead actress Mary Carr. Text: Displays the main movie title text, along with standard production, director, and distributor credits. 2. Scene Card: The Canine Lead Design Focus: Highlights the animal star of the production. Visuals: Features Lassie Bronte, the collie dog who co-starred in the narrative. Layout: Shows the dog in a high-contrast dramatic scene, bordered by the Selznick Distributing Corporation typography. 3. Scene Card: Dramatic Tension Design Focus: Focuses on character dynamics. Visuals: Depicts an intense interaction involving key cast members like Gladys Leslie or Percy Marmont. Coloring: Features hand-applied tinting on the clothing and facial highlights to create visual depth against the monochrome background. 4. Scene Card: Narrative Climax Design Focus: Captures a theatrical ensemble performance moment. Visuals: Showcases a stylized, wide-angle interior shot summarizing the playwriting subplots of the film.
