Book Details: This lot includes the antique portfolio with fold-out maps shown in the corresponding image(s). The two maps present in this volume are "Map of the country between the frontiers of Arkansas and New Mexico, embracing the section explored in 1849, 50, 51, & 52 / by Capt. R.B. Marcy 5th U.S. Infy., under orders from the War Department" and "Map of the country upon upper Red-River explored in 1852 / by Capt. R.B. Marcy 5th U.S. Infy., assisted by Bvt. Capt. G.B. McClellan, U.S. Engs., under orders from the Head Quarters of the U.S. Army." These maps were intended to accompany "Marcy's Exploration of the Red River of Louisiana, in the year 1852" by Randolph B. Marcy and George B. McClellan. These maps show exploration routes, trails, wagon roads, forts and settlements, geographic features, and political boundaries, with notes on Indian tribe distributions, geology and botany.

"Randolph Barnes Marcy (April 9, 1812 – November 22, 1887) was an officer in the United States Army, chiefly noted for his frontier guidebook, the "Prairie Traveler" (1859), based on his own extensive experience of pioneering in the west. This publication became a key handbook for the thousands of Americans wanting to cross the continent. In the Civil War, Marcy became chief of staff to his son-in-law George B. McClellan, and was later appointed Inspector General of the U.S. Army."

"George Brinton McClellan (December 3, 1826 – October 29, 1885) was a major general during the American Civil War and the Democratic presidential nominee in 1864, who later served as Governor of New Jersey. He organized the famous Army of the Potomac and served briefly (November 1861 to March 1862) as the general-in-chief of the Union Army.

In March 1852 he was ordered to report to Capt. Randolph B. Marcy at Fort Smith, Arkansas, to serve as second-in-command on an expedition to discover the sources of the Red River. By June the expedition reached the source of the north fork of the river and Marcy named a small tributary McClellan's Creek. Upon their return to civilization on July 28, they were astonished to find that they had been given up for dead. A sensational story had reached the press that the expedition had been ambushed by 2,000 Comanches and killed to the last man. McClellan blamed the story on "a set of scoundrels, who seek to keep up agitation on the frontier in order to get employment from the Govt. in one way or other." (Information courtesy of Wikipedia)

Condition / Notes: The blind-stamped brown cloth portfolio with gilt lettering to the front cover shows moderate shelfwear. The upper Red River map, measuring approximately 34.75" x 17.5", shows creasing and faint staining at the edges. The Arkansas/New Mexico map has tears, with minor loss, at the intersections of the folds. Due to the delicate state and intricate folding of the larger map a full examination and measuring could not be done.
