East Asia, China, Qing Dynasty, ca. 18th to 19th century CE. A finely carved and polychrome-painted wooden figure of a seated Lohan (Arhat), depicted with serene features and a composed expression. He is robed in layered garments with flowing folds, seated on a tall hexagonal pedestal, and presents a money pouch or alms sack clasped in both hands - likely symbolizing abundance or spiritual wealth. The figure’s high scholar's cap and formal posture suggest reverence and authority, aligning with traditional depictions of enlightened Buddhist disciples. Traces of original pigment in deep mercury red, black, and green remain visible, testifying to the sculpture's vibrant appearance in its original devotional setting. Size: 8" W x 19" H (20.3 cm x 48.3 cm)

Provenance: private Los Angeles, California, USA collection, acquired from 1990 - 2005
