Exceptional Master Engraved Gold-Inlaid Ken Hunt Signed J. Purdey & Sons "Large Scroll Self-Opening" Side Lock Ejector Double Barrel 20 Gauge Self Opening Shotgun with Case The chopper-lump barrels have a single bead sight on the raised matte rib, 2 3/4 inch chambers, ejectors, and improved cylinder chokes. The tops of the barrels are marked. "J. PURDEY & SONS." on the left and "AUDLEY HOUSE. SOUTH AUDLEY STREET. LONDON. ENGLAND" on the right. The barrel flats have standard British commercial proofs. The receiver and lock plates are finely engraved with leafy acanthus scroll designs and finely detailed game scenes with brilliant gold inlay. The right plate shows three partridges, the left depicts three pheasants, and the bottom shows a retriever with a bird in its mouth. Each animal is carefully crafted in fine gold inlay. The plates are signed "K.C. HUNT" below the bird scenes, and the underside is signed "KCH". Finely checkered splinter forearm with Anson style latch, and pistol grip buttstock with carved tear drop flats, hard rubber grip cap, gold initial oval, and checkered bare butt. The barrel and stock measurements are: both barrels proved at .615 and measuring .617, bore diameter at 9 inches from breech .614/.615 inch; minimum wall thickness .028/.031 inch; drop at comb 1 1/2 inches; drop at heel 1 7/8 inches; length of pull 12 3/4 inches. Weight: 5 .lbs 8.2 oz. Includes a leather bound Purdey & Sons motorcase with a two-piece hardwood cleaning rod. The lid of the case is marked "Mrs. C.L. FITZGERALD/GREENWICH, CONN". Clifford L. Fitzgerald of Greenwich, Connecticut was a prominent Manhattan advertising executive. The makers have kindly confirmed that this gun was completed in September 1966 for Mrs. Clifford L. Fitzgerald with large scroll engraving by Hunt with birds in gold on both locks and a running dog in gold underneath. The records also note that the stock was to have an American comb, pistol grip and cap. The barrels have 98% original blue finish with some light edge wear, and visible surface scratches near the breech. The receiver and lock plates have 95% original subdued case colors with sharp engraving, very fine detail, and some light silvering along the bottom edges. The wood is fine with crisp checkering, tight joints, and a numerous scattered dings and bruises. The case is fine with some scuffs, and scratches on the exterior.
