Princess Margaret Pair of Lovely Handwritten Letters to Brooke Astor
ALSs

Princess Margaret, Countess of Snowdon (1930-2002). Pair of letters to Brooke Astor: an autograph letter signed, "Margaret," 2pp on one sheet of her pale blue-grey personal stationery measuring 5.5" x 7.75", Hobe Sound, Florida, March 9, 1989; and an autograph letter signed, "Margaret," 1p, on her personal embossed stationery measuring 6.25" x 8.5", with matching envelope addressed in her hand, New York, New York, March 8, 1990. Both letters with expected mailing folds and creases. Both with a former collector's notations in pencil. Minor edge toning to the 1989 letter. Faint soiling to the 1990 letter. In near fine condition overall.

Princess Margaret writes to American philanthropist and socialite Brooke Astor (1902-2007) with thanks for hosting her and with hopes that Astor will visit London soon.

Both letters, in full:

"March 9, 1989
Dear Brooke,

That was a perfectly delightful luncheon at your house in the country. It was so kind of you to have me and entertain us so well. I adored the Satie, & I feel it will be much enhanced by your performing it in French the next time! I much enjoyed the whole day and send my warmest thanks with the hope that I will see you in London soon.

With love from
Margaret."

"March 8, 1990
Dear Brooke,

That was a really sparkling party you gave. Wonderful food, nice people and delicious wine. A million thanks for a delightful evening and for giving me such a lovely time. I hope to see you in London town.

With love
Margaret."

Princess Margaret and Brooke Astor were iconic 20th-century socialites who moved in the same international high-society circles. Both women were dedicated philanthropists, and both navigated highly scrutinized personal lives marked by sacrifice and marital difficulties.
