[Presidential] Sachse, Julius F. Authentic Portraits of Washington Arranged in Chronological Order. A Series of Heliographic Reproductions

Philadelphia: (Privately Printed), 1893. First and limited edition, No. 5 of only six copies printed. Folio. From the library of chief engineer and vice president of the Lehigh Valley Railroad Robert Heysham Sayre, and with his illustrated book-plate on front paste-down. Illustrated with 47 heliographic plates, each mounted to thick card as issued; each with letterpress caption leaf. Original full blue morocco-covered boards, gilt profile portrait of Washington on front board, boards and extremities rubbed and lightly worn, front and rear boards starting, loss in upper and lower spine; all edges gilt; gilt dentelles; patterned endpapers; scattered foxing to plate mounts.

With an autograph letter laid in, from Sachse to a W.H. Campion Esq. of Philadelphia, dated December 17, 1896, noting the limitation of this edition and locations of the other five copies: "In reply to your note will state that there were but six copies printed of my 'Authentic Portraits of Washington' some of the negatives have since been destroyed. The copies were placed as follows 1. Mr. Clarence Bensch 2 Hon S.W. Pennypacker 3 Mr Havemyer 4 I think this copy went to Chicago 5 Copy sent you ("Now Robert H. Sayer's" in pencil appended after in a different hand) 6. My personal copy."

Rare, according to RBH, in the past 30 years only one other copy has come to auction, sold in these rooms in 2003. OCLC locates only one copy, at the Athenaeum of Philadelphia.
