Exceptional Civil War Presentation Grade Clauberg Damascus Sword Blade with "Always Ready" Motto, Sculpted Furniture, and Silver Grip Measuring 41 inches in overall length, this word is fitted with a 35 inch curved double fuller blade which shows a fine Damascus pattern on the upper half and a fine gold wash and etched decoration on the lower half. The spine is marked "IRON PROOF" among vinework, with the "W./CLAUBERG/(knight)/SOLINGEN" maker's mark on the left side of the ricasso. Both sides of the blade bear American patriotic designs amid scrollwork, and an array of arms at the bottom of the fullers, with the Federal Eagle on the left and the right marked "US" and "Always Ready"; while not identified to a specific owner, "Always Ready" (in the Latin form "Semper Paratus") is the motto of the U.S. Army 16th Infantry Regiment, as well as the motto (and after 1928, the name of the marching song) of the United States Coast Guard. The hilt is finely sculpted gilt brass, with oak leaf accents and scroll designs, as well as a floral pattern around the pommel cap. Of particular note is the guard, which uses a two-branch configuration similar to the Staff & Field pattern sword, with the addition of layers of additional gilt brass three dimensional scroll, which interweaves with itself as well as the branches, creating a depth not often seen in American sword decoration. A fine cast silver grip is installed, with alternating panels of oak leaf decoration and punch dot texture. The scabbard is nickel finished, with gilt brass suspension bands and tip, all adorned with raised and sculpted oak themed designs on the faces. Manufacturer: None Model: None BBL: Stock: Gauge: Finish: Grips: Serial Number: Class: Other Condition: Exceptionally fine overall. The excellent blade shows some light handling wear overall, with some rubbing on the gold wash from the scabbard throat, with fine detail in the etching and Damascus pattern. The hilt shows fine detail, with some gentle loss of the gilt finish in a few areas and a few dings on the grip. Light indentations are present on the center left side of scabbard, with evidence of a professional repair just above the "drag" and some loss of finish on the fittings. This Civil War sword is outstanding!
