Cased Presentation British Swivel Barrel Percussion Pistol with 1865 Dated Inscription and Research The right side of the frame reads, "Presented by/D. PETTS,/-to-/T. WESTCOTT,/Butler to A.J. Hurt Esqre." The left side of the frame reads, "Alderwasley Hall/-1865-." British proofs appear on the left side of the barrels and breech plugs. The barrels have engraved wide bands at the muzzles. The mythical creature engraved hammer has checkering on the spur. The action has a sliding hammer safety. The one piece grip is finely checkered and has a silver oval thumb escutcheon. The nicely figured partitioned case is lined in blazing blue felt and contains a mallet double sided flask, oiler, bullet mold, lead balls, UMC percussion cap tin and ramrod. The top of the lid has a presentation plaque that matches the inscription found on the gun: "PRESENTED/-BY-/D. PETTS/-TO-/T. WESTCOTT" and "ALDERWASLEY HALL 1865." Alderwasley Hall was the family home to the Hurt family of Alderwasley, a township near Wirksworth, England. Albert Frederic Hurt was lord of the manor from 1861 to 1907 and served with the Derbyshire Regiment, holding the honorary title of lieutenant colonel. Research by William E. Schubert including the article "When Three's a Crowd and Five's Too Many" discussing the presentation and census information (copies also included) that indicates Daniel Petts of Alderwasley presented the pistol to Thomas Westcott. The article proposes that the men must have been good friends, and the pistol was presented to Westcott when he was promoted from footman of the estate to butler in 1865. Manufacturer: British Model: Percussion BBL: 1 7/8 inch round Stock: Gauge: 44 percussion Finish: casehardened Grips: walnut Serial Number: NSN Class: Antique Condition: Fine. The pistol retains 60% period refurbished case colors, otherwise a smooth gray patina. The grip is excellent with a few blemishes in the overall crisp checkering. Mechanically excellent.
