Sheet Size: 420 x 296 mm (16.54 x 11.65 in) Plate Size: 380 x 245 mm (14.96 x 9.65 in),Victory over the Dacians Vittoria Dacica Image Source: High Reliefs on the Arch of Constantine, Rome Printmaker: Pietro Santi Bartoli Publisher: Domenico de' Rossi Date Range: 1650-1691 Medium: Etching Watermark: Double-circle Lily Victory over the Dacians is an etched copperplate print produced between 1650 and 1691 by Pietro Santi Bartoli, an Italian painter, antiquarian and printmaker, after the high relief sculptures on the Arch of Constantine in Rome. Born in Perugia, Bartoli later moved to Rome, where he studied under Jean Lemaire and Nicolas Poussin. He gained renown for his engravings of classical antiquities. By reproducing little-known ancient artworks through prints, he became an iconic master of archaeological illustration. This print is one of four plates in a matching series. The four works each correspond to one of the four high relief panels on the Arch of Constantine in Rome, depicting battle scenes from Emperor Trajan's military campaigns against the Dacians. The composition is split into two halves. In the foreground of the left section stand three central figures: the Roman goddess on the far left, Emperor Trajan at the center, and a personified Victory wreath floating above the ground on the right. The right half features an independent combat scene showing Roman soldiers slaying Dacian warriors. The double-circle lily watermark is commonly found on Italian paper, with wide geographical distribution and a long chronological span. It is thought to have originated in central Italy, including Lazio, Umbria and the Marche regions. Paper mills of Soldini, Serafini and Mariotti in Fabriano also adopted this watermark. Papermakers used watermarks not only to mark manufacturing origins but also to grade paper quality. The double-circle lily serves this latter purpose, signifying premium paper produced locally. It typically appears as a secondary watermark and exists in numerous variant designs.
