PIERRE SOULAGES (1919-2022), ATTRIBUTED TO, OIL ON CANVAS

Dimensions:

Image size: 65 x 50 cm. All measured values are approximate.

Provenance and Authenticity:

This painting is presented in the manner and style associated with Pierre Soulages, one of the most significant figures of post-war European abstraction. Executed in oil on canvas, the work exhibits the bold black forms, powerful gestural brushwork, and emphasis on surface texture that became defining characteristics of Soulages' mature artistic language. The composition reflects the artist's longstanding exploration of light and material through black pigment and abstract structure, qualities that established his international reputation within twentieth-century abstract painting.

Signature:

Pierre Soulages

Description:

The composition is dominated by a dynamic arrangement of broad black brushstrokes layered vertically and diagonally across a warm earth-toned background. Thick applications of pigment create a strong physical presence, while exposed areas of the underlying surface generate luminous intervals that activate the surrounding darkness. The intersecting forms suggest architectural rhythms and structural tension without resolving into recognizable imagery, allowing the painting to exist entirely through gesture, balance, and material interaction. Variations in texture and sheen across the black passages capture and reflect light differently across the surface, echoing the visual principles that define Pierre Soulages' celebrated investigations into abstraction and luminosity.

Historical significance:

Pierre Soulages occupies a central position within post-war European abstraction and is widely regarded as one of France's most influential contemporary painters. His pioneering exploration of black as a source of reflected light culminated in the development of his celebrated "Outrenoir" series, which transformed monochromatic painting into an immersive experience of texture and illumination. His work has been exhibited extensively in major museums worldwide and continues to exert a profound influence on contemporary abstract art.

Valuation:

Works presented in the manner of Pierre Soulages continue to attract strong international collector interest, particularly among buyers focused on post-war abstraction and European contemporary art. Compositions featuring bold gestural structures and dramatic tonal contrasts remain especially sought after due to their close association with the artist's most recognizable visual language.
