[Philadelphia] Manuscript Land Indenture Related to the Schuylkill Navigation Company

Philadelphia, April 11, 1822. Single sheet, approximately 28 x 24 1/2 in. (711 x 622 mm) (sight). Large manuscript land indenture on vellum, between the Schuylkill Navigation Company and Peter Robeson of Roxborough Township, Philadelphia, for a "lot or piece of Ground situate in Roxborough Township", for $4,500; signed at bottom by Robeson, Cadwalader Evans, President of the Schuylkill Navigation Company, two witnesses, and a Philadelphia alderman. Paper and wax seal present in bottom right. Unexamined out of frame.

The Schuylkill Navigation Company was chartered by the Pennsylvania Legislature in 1815 to build a navigation system of canals, dams, and slack water pools, from Mill Creek, north of Pottsville, along the river south to Philadelphia. Operating as a private corporation, by 1828 the Company's canals stretched 363 miles, and reached north to the coal-rich city of Port Carbon, Pennsylvania. Following an enlargment of the canal system in the 1840s, by 1859 the Company's canals reached their maximum transported tonnage of 1,699,101 tons, with over 80% being coal.
This lot is located in Philadelphia.
