[Philadelphia] Hill, John William, and Benjamin Francis Smith. Philadelphia, From Girard College-1850

(New York): Francis Smith, 1850. Hand-colored tinted lithograph, by John William Hill and Benjamin Franklin Smith, Jr. Printed by F. Michelin. 27 1/2 x 42 1/4 in. (698 x 1,073 mm). Mounted to paper board; repaired tears and wear along edges, some extending into image; top right corner repaired, but not affecting image. In mat and in frame. Reps 3579

A fine and rare panoramic view of Philadelphia at mid 19th-century, taken from an imaginary perspective above Girard College. Founded in 1833 and opened in 1848, Girard College was established by permanent endowment by businessman and philanthropist Stephen Girard. Originally founded as a boarding school for poor white male orphans, by the mid-1960s following mass protests, it integrated to allow all races. During its history it has graduated more than 20,000 orphans, and now operates as a college preparatory school.

Oriented west, in the left mid-ground can be seen Eastern State Penitentiary, with the Schuylkill River to the right, and off to the left the densely and bustlingly Delaware River waterfront, including Christ's Church, Shot Tower, and other landmarks.
This lot is located in Philadelphia.

  • Provenance: W. Graham Aradar III, label on reverse of frame
