[Philadelphia] Birch, Thomas. The Upper Ferry Bridge Over the River Schuylkill near Morris street in the County of Philadelphia...

(Philadelphia, ca. 1819). Hand-colored engraving, by Jacob J. Plocher after Thomas Birch. Darkened. Approximately 16 x 21 in. (406 x 533 mm) (sight). In mat and unexamined out of frame. Deak 314; Snyder, Mirror of America 754; Stauffer 2549

Thomas Birch's "masterfully rendered" (Deak) view of the Upper Ferry Bridge over the Schuylkill River. "The Upper Ferry, or Fairmount Bridge, was erected between 1809 and 1812 from the designs of Louis Wernwag, a German-born, self-taught engineer, and Robert Mills, the American architect whose career was encouraged by Thomas Jefferson. Built entirely of wood, the covered bridge spanned the Schuylkill with a single elliptical arch, 340 feet between abutments. Its beauty and charm matched the remarkable engineering feat, and the success of 'The Colossus' brought Wernwag well-deserved attention and many new commissions. Within less than three decades, however, his Schuylkill creation was destroyed by fire (on 1 September 1838)." (Deak)
