Well-Documented Pennsylvania Flintlock American Long Rifle with Wood Patchbox This rifle is featured as rifle no. 1 in Plate 106 of "The Kentucky Rifle" by Captain John G. W. Dillin and identified as from the Cline Collection (presumably Walter Cline). The later editions note that they are Pennsylvania rifles and this particular rifle is "the Lehigh Valley Type." It was later in the Richard Eddy and Tom Seymour Collection and is identified in the included correspondence as his "Rev. War era flintlock rifle" while Seymour was conducting his research on the classic "Lehigh Lady," "Lehigh Indian," or "Son of Liberty" carving ahead of the trigger guard that is associated with the Lehigh Valley and Northampton County in Pennsylvania in the late 18th century and early 19th century. The exact meaning and origin of this attractive and fascinating motif remains a matter of debate among Kentucky rifle collectors and is discussed in multiple include articles and correspondence. The use of a wood patchbox is often associated with the pre-Revolutionary War Kentucky rifles but was also used by some makers into the 19th century. The stock is noted as cherry. The bore has traces of rifling and was likely re-bored to smoothbore after the rifling became worn from use. The rifle has a dovetailed blade and notch sights, two lines engraved ahead of and behind the rear sight as well as on the tail of the side plate, an unmarked Germanic style lock, plain single trigger, scroll and foliate engraving on the brass mounts including a slightly left off-set wrist escutcheon and a pointed toe plate, a checkered panel at the ramrod entry point, incised molding along the underside of the butt, grooved cheekpiece edge, a faint name written on the cheekpiece (possibly the maker or an owner), and scrollwork in ink on the patchbox lid.
