Outstanding Providence Tool Peabody-Martini Long-Range Creedmoor Single Shot Target Rifle This is an outstanding Martini Creedmoor Target Rifle manufactured by the Providence Tool Company of Providence, Rhode Island, circa 1875 to 1880s. Several variations of this rifle were manufactured and it is estimated that less than a thousand of all types of sporting models were produced. This example is the Creedmoor model rifle that was designed for the International Long Range rifle matches held in Creedmoor NY. It is equipped with an original wind-gauge adjustable globe front sight and a tang mounted long range rear sight. The half-round/half-octagon barrel is marked on the top flat "MANUFACTURED BY THE PROVIDENCE TOOL CO. PROVIDENCE RI. U.S.A." followed by the caliber markings "44 CAL/100GRS" stamped in front of the receiver ring. The left side of the receiver is factory engraved "Creedmoor," and the right side is engraved "PEABODY & MARTINI PATENTS". The upper right side of the receiver has the checkered thumb rest panel along with a factory checkered trigger face and a sliding safety lever. This wonderful rifle is fitted with a excellent set of straight grained stock and forearm that has a double checkered panels on each side of the pistol grip area, and the rear half of the forearm is checkered in four different panels. The stock has a smooth steel buttplate and a steel Schnabel forearm tip. The heel of the buttstock and area directly behind the receiver are both fitted with the original steel bases for the long range Creedmoor rear sights. This rare rifle is complete with an original "Marlin Improved Long Range Peep" rear sight that was typically used on Ballard Long Range and Creedmoor type rifles. The serial number (313) is stamped on the underside of the receiver under the cocking lever, on the underside of the barrel, forend lug and inside the barrel channel of the forend.
