Historic Documented Honus Wagner Presentation Inscribed Factory Engraved Parker Brothers DH Grade Double Barrel Shotgun This Parker Brothers double features a silver inscription plate on the belly of the stock that reads "COMP'S of FRIENDS/Hans Wagner/CARNEGIE, AUG 30-01". Johannes Peter "Honus" Wagner (1874-1955) was born in what is now Carnegie, Pennsylvania to German immigrants, he would go on to play 21 seasons in Major League Baseball, almost exclusively for the Pittsburgh Pirates. Wagner was one of the first five men inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1936 receiving the second highest vote total behind only Ty Cobb, and tied with Babe Ruth. Cobb himself (often referred to as the greatest player of the dead ball era) once called Wagner; "Maybe the greatest star ever to take the diamond." Manufactured in 1901 with a single bead sight, solid matte rib marked "PARKER BROS. MAKERS MERIDEN. CONN. TITANIC STEEL", 2 3/4 inch chambers, single extractor and improved cylinder/improved cylinder chokes. Standard patent, serial number, and grade markings on the water table with D grade engraving of hunting dogs on the sides, pheasants on the bottom, and tight American scroll on the balance. Checkered splinter forearm and pistol grip stock with a skeleton buttplate over a checkered bare butt. Barrel and stock measurements are: bore diameter at 9 inches from breech .733/.734 inch; minimum wall thickness .028/.029 inch; drop at comb 1 1/2 inches; drop at heel 2 1/4 inches; length of pull 14 1/4 inches. Includes a notarized, 1998 dated copy of two 1956 dated sales receipts for two Parker Brothers shotguns, listed by serial number and gauge (the other is also featured in this auction!) signed by Bessie B. Wagner and a copy of a 1998 Tribune-Review article detailing the sale of a pair of shotguns owned by Wagner to Dan Hardesty of Franklin, Pennsylvania, where he intended to display them in his Wild West Museum. The barrels have an overall mottled gray and brown patina with some rough spotting and light pitting throughout. The receiver has a mostly gray patina with areas of gray spotting, scattered nicks and dings, and fine engraving. The buttstock has been repaired at the wrist and reinforced with wire with dings and small gouges throughout, worn checkering and flats, and a visible repair on the left side of the comb. Mechanically very good. A great opportunity to own a gun associated with one of the greatest players in early 20th century baseball.
