PAIR OF SCRIMSHAW WHALE'S TEETH BY "KING OF THE SEA ENGRAVER" SAMUEL TENNEY
19th Century
Obverse of one depicts Neptune holding a billowing flag emblazoned "King of the Sea", with a school of fish in the water below him. The other depicts a helmeted Lady Liberty holding a shield at her side and a torch aloft, with an eagle and a "Liberty and Freedom" banner above her head. The scenes wrap around to the reverses, which feature port-side portraits of American triple-decker gunships. Executed in blue-green ink, like other examples attributed to Tenney.

  • Provenance:
    Collection of Michael Gerstein.

    Reference:
Illustrated in Wandering Whalemen and Their Art: A Collection of Scrimshaw Masterpieces by Alan Granby (Hyannis Port, Mass.:, 2021), p. 75-76.
A pair of scrimshaw walrus tusks that can also be confidently attributed to Tenney, also executed in blue-green ink and with nearly identical images of Neptune and Lady Liberty, are illustrated in Scrimshaw and Scrimshanders, Whales and Whalemen by E. Norman Flayderman (New Milford, Ct.: N. Flayderman & Co., Inc., 1972), p. 75. Other examples by Tenney are illustrated on p. 6 and 61.
A biography of Samuel Tenney in Biographical Dictionary of Scrimshaw Artists: Five Centuries of the Occupational Folk Art of the Whalers by Stuart M. Frank (2025), p. 277-278, specifically mentions this pair.

    Notes:
Samuel W. Tenney's identity was discovered by scrimshaw historian Michael Gerstein through a tooth in the collection of Historic New England, which was donated by the scrimshander's daughter in 1925. Tenney was born in Oxford, Massachusetts and served in the Navy aboard the U.S.S. "Brandywine" and later on the whaleship "Fenelon" of New Bedford. Several examples of Tenney teeth have come to market at Eldred's, including Lot #623 in the November 21, 2013 auction, Lots #31 and #233 in the July 25, 2019 auction, one from the collection of Paul Vardeman and the other from the collection of Sam and Donna McDowell, and Lots #4013, #4082 and #4083 in the August 10, 2023 auction.
