Pair of Richard Wilson Officer's Flintlock Blunderbuss Pistols -A) R. Wilson "Dragon" Pistol Pair of Richard Wilson Officer's Flintlock Blunderbuss Pistols -A) R. Wilson "Dragon" Pistol Richard Wilson (1703-1766) started his apprenticeship in 1718 and became a master gunmaker in 1741. He manufactured firearms for the crown, Honorable East India Co., Hudson's Bay Co., and others. His son William continued the family business into the early 19th century. Wilson pistols and muskets were used in the Seven Years War/French & Indian War and the American Revolution by both the British and the Americans. Many saw use in both conflicts. Blunderbuss style pistols were well-suited for mounted and naval officers. The lightly flared muzzles made them easier to load without obstructing aiming. The muzzles measure 1 inch across the insides, and the caliber above is estimated. This pairs nearly all brass fittings would have made them particularly well-suited for a naval officer since brass is naturally more resistant to the corrosive effects of saltwater. The barrels are marked "LONDON" near the breech ahead of patches of engraving and with London Gunmakers' Company private proof and view marks on either side of Wilson's "RW" stamp on the left side. The locks are inscribed "WILSON" and have border designs and small flourishes of floral scroll engraving. There are floral and border patterns engraved on the various fittings. The wooden ramrods have horn tips, and one has a worm attachment.
