Engraved, Silver Mounted, and Carved Pair of French Double Barrel Flintlock Holster Pistols by Penel Freres of St. Etienne, Mid-18th Century-A) Penel Freres Flintlock Pistol Engraved, Silver Mounted, and Carved Pair of French Double Barrel Flintlock Holster Pistols by Penel Freres of St. Etienne, Mid-18th Century-A) Penel Freres Flintlock Pistol The Penel family of St. Etienne was active from the 17th century into the 19th century. The Penel Brothers are known to have supplied the French Gendarmerie and were active around 1740-1760. They have "PENEL/FRERES" on the right locks and "A ST ETIENNE" on the left locks. The barrels have floral and punch dot designs. The trigger guards and tendril style pommel caps are cast silver and chased with in relief with hunting trophies. The plugs have busts of men likely meant to be from the Ottoman Empire or Indian sub-continent. The ramrod pipes are also silver and are bone tipped. One pommel spur is cracked. The re-oiled stock has crisp carving, a partially repaired crack along the left side of the forend, small chips at the nose of the left lock, and minor marks and scratches. Mechanically excellent. The cap has some cracking. The re-oiled stock has distinct raised carving, faint repaired crack on the nose of the forend on the left, and general minor marks and scratches. Mechanically excellent. Overall a very attractive pair of French flintlock pistols with ornate silver furniture.
