Pre-Columbian, Colombia, Narino culture, ca. 700 to 1500 CE. A pair of Narino pedestal bowls, one larger than the other, share the same assured form and decorative vocabulary: negative resist technique deployed in bold dark geometric bands, zigzags, and dot registers reserved against a warm red ground. The larger bowl carries interlocking diamonds and serrated chevrons on the body, with a row of negative circles punctuating the pedestal, while the smaller favors tighter horizontal banding and a more restrained zigzag pattern, the two vessels complementary in vocabulary if not identical in execution. Pedestal bowls of this form appear throughout Narino funerary contexts in the highlands straddling present-day Colombia and Ecuador, where they likely served as prestige vessels for offerings or communal feasting, their elevated profiles and polished surfaces marking them as objects made for display as much as use.   • Condition: Larger has a few stable hairline fissurs. Both have expected weathering with nicks and abrasions commensurate with age. Otherwise, both are very nice with good remaining decoration.
