Pair of Medieval Gregorian Choir Pages
16th-17th century, Euopean
A pair of Medieval Gregorian choir pages. Features standard Roman Catholic liturgical music meant to be sung in unison during Mass. Both utilize Gothic "rotunda" script, this script was favored in Southern Europe from the 1300s up through the mid-1500s because its wide, rounded characters made it easy for a whole choir to read simultaneously from a distance. Furthermore, both feature Gregorian notation: black square and diamond-shaped notes on red four-line staves remained the standard format for Roman Catholic Gregorian chant for centuries. Double sided and enclosed in clear acrylic protective sleeves.
(1) Leaflet page containing two Latin chants: offertory: Exspectans exspectavi Dominum ("With expectation I have waited for the Lord"), and gradual/verse: Laetabimur in salutari tuo ("We shall rejoice in thy salvation").
(1) This page continues the proper chants of the Mass, containing the conclusion of one chant, a complete Gradual with its verse, and the beginning of an Offertory. Gradual Verse Conclusion: ...et illuminamini: et facies vestrae non confundentur.Translation: "...and be enlightened: and your faces shall not be confounded." (From Psalm 33:6) / Gradual: Beata gens, cuius est Dominus Deus eorum: populus, quem elegit Dominus in hereditatem sibi.Translation: "Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord: the people whom He hath chosen for His inheritance." (From Psalm 32:12) / Offertory (off.): Benedicite, gentes, Dominum Deum nostrum...Translation: "O bless the Lord our God, ye Gentiles..." (From Psalm 65:8).
