P.F. Sedgley Winchester Model 1885 High Wall Single Shot Musket in .22 Hornet The serial number dates to 1918, with this particular Winchester Model 1885 High Wall musket being a highly desirable example built by P.F. Sedgley c. the mid-1920s. In the early 20th century the Sedgley firm had become known as one of the premier names in sporting and competition rifles and they are known by knowledgeable collectors to have purchased Winchester's remaining Model 1885 parts around 1923, advertising "The New Sedgley Winchester Single Shot Rifle" in newspapers shortly after. It is also quite possible that this particular Model 1885 was originally built by Winchester as a standard High Wall musket before being sent to P.F. Sedgley and built in this current configuration, which varies slightly from the standard musket pattern. The top of the barrel is marked "P.F. SEDGLEY INC. PHILA PA.USA.", while the left of the barrel at the breech is marked "CAL. 22.W.C.F./HORNET" and has an "(S)" Sedgley proof. The upper tang is marked with the standard three-line Winchester trademark, while the serial number is on the lower tang. It is fitted with a ramped blade front sight, no provision for a rear sight, two drilled/tapped holes on top of the barrel with filler screws in place, a Lyman peep sight mounted on the upper tang, a serpentine type finger lever, and sling swivels on the barrel band and the bottom of the stock. It is fitted with the typical musket-pattern forearm with grasping grooves and a straight grip stock with a checkered hard rubber buttplate. Includes a leather sling.
