OTTO EMIL JOHANSEN
Norwegian, 1886–1934

Oil on board
Expressionistic oil painting which captures a rugged Norwegian vista. The composition is dominated by a central, towering mountain massif rendered in deep ochres, umbers, and burnt sienna, with hints of green and orange suggesting sun-dappled vegetation or exposed rock faces. Signed and dated lower left. Unframed.

  • Provenance: ARTIST PROFILE: Otto Emil Johansen (1886–1934) was a distinguished Norwegian painter and graphic artist who became a key figure in the transition of Norwegian art from naturalism to modernism. Born in Holmestrand and trained under masters like Christian Krohg and Harriet Backer, he later refined his craft in Paris under Othon Friesz, where he developed a sophisticated understanding of color and form. His oeuvre is marked by an extraordinary stylistic flexibility; he moved seamlessly from the vibrant, Fauvist-inspired palettes of his youth to the more somber, tonal "dark period" influenced by André Derain, before ultimately returning to a luminous, atmospheric style in his later landscapes of Telemark and Lillehammer. Known as a "receptive" artist, Johansen had a unique ability to synthesize contemporary European trends—including Impressionism and Cubism—into a distinctly Nordic sensibility. His career was cut short at the age of 48, but he left behind a significant legacy, with his works now held in the permanent collections of the National Museum in Oslo and various municipal galleries across Norway.
  • Dimensions: 15 x 18 inches
