ODILON REDON (1840-1916), ATTRIBUTED TO, OIL ON CANVAS

Dimensions:

Image size: 40.9 x 31.7 cm. All measured values are approximate.

Provenance and Authenticity:

This painting is presented in the manner and style associated with Odilon Redon, one of the most influential figures of Symbolism and late nineteenth-century French art. Executed in oil on canvas, the work displays the atmospheric color harmonies, dreamlike imagery, and poetic sensibility that distinguish Redon's mature paintings. The composition bears a signature in the lower right corner and reflects the artist's celebrated transition from his early monochromatic works to the luminous color explorations of his later years.

Signature:

Odilon Redon

Description:

The composition depicts a solitary sailing vessel gliding across tranquil waters beneath a radiant sky filled with softly diffused clouds and shimmering reflections. Delicate tones of rose, lavender, pale blue, and warm gold merge seamlessly across the surface, creating an ethereal atmosphere that transforms the seascape into a poetic and meditative vision rather than a literal representation of nature. The sail rises elegantly against the horizon, while the surrounding light dissolves forms into subtle veils of color and texture. Loose brushwork and harmonious tonal transitions evoke a sense of stillness and introspection, qualities that closely align with the symbolic and spiritual dimensions that characterize Odilon Redon's most admired landscapes and visionary compositions.

Historical significance:

Odilon Redon occupies a central position within the Symbolist movement and is regarded as one of the most original artistic voices of the late nineteenth century. His work profoundly influenced the development of modern art through its emphasis on imagination, emotion, and the inner world of dreams and memory. His luminous color paintings of the early twentieth century anticipated aspects of Fauvism and abstraction while maintaining a deeply personal and poetic visual language.

Valuation:

Works presented in the manner of Odilon Redon continue to attract sustained interest among collectors of Symbolist and Post-Impressionist art. Intimate compositions featuring atmospheric color relationships and contemplative subject matter are particularly sought after for their decorative qualities and their close connection to the artist's celebrated late period.
