NY Politicians & Notables Collection: Conkling, Seymour, Tilden & More!
Archive

An exceptional collection of autograph correspondence and signatures connected to Charles O'Conor, one of the most celebrated constitutional lawyers in American history. The group brings together an extraordinary roster of nineteenth-century New York political and legal leaders, including Samuel J. Tilden, Horatio Seymour, Fernando Wood, Daniel Lord, and Roscoe Conkling. Overall fine condition, see photos for details. Largest example measures 5" x 8".

Among the highlights is an autograph letter signed by Samuel J. Tilden, future Governor of New York and Democratic presidential nominee. Written during the Civil War era, Tilden introduces a delegation of Maryland Democrats to O'Conor, reflecting both men's influence within the national Democratic Party. A second Tilden letter, dated January 11, 1873, introduces Reverend William Lane of Greenpoint, Brooklyn, and warmly recommends him to O'Conor's confidence and consideration.

An 1860 letter signed by Horatio Seymour, future Governor of New York and Democratic presidential nominee, introduces a gentleman described as possessing the highest character and deserving of O'Conor's confidence. The letter reflects the professional and political relationship between two leading Democratic figures during one of the most consequential periods in American history.

The collection also contains correspondence from Daniel Lord, one of the most distinguished attorneys of the nineteenth century. Lord's note expresses his esteem and respect for O'Conor, linking two legendary members of the New York bar whose legal reputations extended throughout the nation.

A highly desirable autograph of Roscoe Conkling, the dominant Republican political leader of post-Civil War New York, represents the opposing side of the state's political establishment. Conkling's signature adds significant breadth to the collection, demonstrating O'Conor's connections across party lines.

Also included is correspondence from Fernando Wood, one of the most colorful and controversial political figures in New York history. A dominant force in New York City politics, Wood served multiple terms as Mayor of New York City and later represented New York in Congress.

The true unifying figure of the collection is Charles O'Conor (1804-1884). Widely regarded as one of the greatest constitutional lawyers of the nineteenth century, O'Conor stood at the center of New York's legal, political, and intellectual life. His prominence attracted correspondence from governors, senators, presidential nominees, mayors, congressmen, clergy, and leading attorneys.
