North America, United States, New York State, ca. 427,000,000–423,000,000 BCE. A fossil Eurypterus preserved in a stone matrix, the segmented body, broad carapace, and trailing telson clearly articulated against the matrix. These extinct aquatic arthropods inhabited shallow Silurian lagoons some 420 million years ago and are distant relatives of modern arachnids and horseshoe crabs. This specimen is consistent with material weathering from the Bertie Formation of western New York, where periodic hypersaline conditions preserved molted exoskeletons in fine detail. Size: 6.25" W x 4.8" H x 0.6" D (15.9 cm W x 12.2 cm H x 1.5 cm D).

Provenance: private Healy collection, Studio City, California, USA, acquired 1995-2015
