Highly Attractive New York Engraved Silver-Plated Colt Model 1861 Navy Percussion Revolver with Snake and Eagle Relief Carved Grip Manufactured in 1864. The revolver features scroll New York retailer engraving on a punch-dot background by Master Engraver Louis D. Nimschke or his shop. In addition to the scrollwork, the revolver has Nimschke's characteristic wolf head on the sides of the hammer. The scrollwork is featured on most of the major components while entwining line and dot motifs appear on the loading lever and butt. The top of the barrel has the one-line New York address on top, the frame has "COLTS/PATENT" on the left side and the cylinder has the roll-engraving naval scene accented with hand engraved wavy lines and dots. The revolver does not have "E" stamped below the serial number that was used to designate factory engraved components in the mid-1860s. Matching numbers are found on the barrel, both grip straps, cylinder, arbor pin and wedge. The checkered grip has a relief carved Mexican eagle on the left side. Manufacturer: Colt Model: 1861 Navy BBL: 7 1/2 inch round Stock: Gauge: 36 percussion Finish: silver Grips: antique ivory Serial Number: 17452 Class: Antique Condition: Fine. The revolver retains 40% original silver plating (mostly on the grip straps, otherwise in the protected areas) with the balance a smooth gray patina. Most of the cylinder scene remains. The grip is very fine with the checkering and eagle remaining crisp overall and attractive aged color. Mechanically excellent. This engraved Model 1861 revolver will be a great addition to any Colt percussion collection.
