A New Era for the Yankees: The year 1931 marked Joe McCarthy's debut season as manager of the New York Yankees. After a successful stint managing the Chicago Cubs, McCarthy was brought to New York to institute his strict, professional "Yankee Way," which ultimately yielded 8 pennants and 7 World Series titles. A New Era for the League: Concurrently, Will Harridge assumed office as American League President in 1931 following the brief tenure of Ernest Barnard. This photograph captures a formal or ceremonial meeting between the newly minted league boss and the powerhouse team's new skipper. Because these were exposed directly inside the camera at the stadium, an original dry plate negative is a one-of-a-kind artifact. It represents the master image from which any subsequent newspaper or newsreel prints were struck. Will Harridge served as the third president of the American League (AL), holding the office from 1931 to 1959. His 28-year tenure stands as the longest in the history of the American League. Today, he is primarily remembered as the namesake of the William Harridge Trophy, which is awarded annually to the champion of the American League Championship Series (ALCS).
