Documented Desirable New York Militia Marked John T. Cleveland Sub-Inspected, U.S. Colt Single Action Army Cavalry Model Revolver Manufactured in 1877, this revolver is one of 800 Cavalry Model Single Action Army revolvers refurbished by Colt circa 1895 and issued to the New York Militia and inspected by Ordnance Sub-Inspector John T. Cleveland. The barrels and cylinders were restamped with the full serial number by Colt during refurbishment. The left side of the grip is stamped with the New York rack number "A/250", and the butt has the lanyard swivel fitted by New York militia armorers to some of the Cavalry Model revolvers. This revolver's serial number is listed on page 49 of reference book "Colt Cavalry and Artillery Revolvers" by Kopec and Fenn. The top of the barrel is marked with the one line address, and the left side of the frame is marked with the two line, two patent dates followed by "U.S." Small "J.T.C." sub-inspection stamps are visible on the underside of the barrel, the bottom of the frame and on the side of the cylinder. A "P" proofmark is also stamped on the underside of the barrel in front of the sub-inspection mark and on the cylinder. Small "C" and "G" factory inspection marks are stamped on the barrel below the ejector housing stud, "S" and "O" are restamped on the rear face of the cylinder, and "C" is stamped in the hammer well above the firing pin hole. The complete serial number is stamped on the frame, barrel, trigger guard, back strap and cylinder. Two additional digits were added to the partial serial numbers originally stamped on the barrel and cylinder when the revolver was refurbished in 1895. The revolver has the late oval ejector rod and cavalry hammer with elongated bordered knurling on the spur and cone-shaped firing pin. Casehardened frame and hammer with blue remaining parts. Fitted with a smooth one-piece walnut grip which was replaced during the overhaul. There is an "R.A.C." stamped on the bottom right side. Manufacturer: Colt Model: Single Action Army BBL: 7 1/2 inch round Stock: Gauge: 45 LC Finish: blue/casehardened Grips: walnut Serial Number: 33060 Class: Antique Condition: Very fine. The revolver retains 70% of the 1895 Colt refurbished blue and casehardened finish showing some holster wear on the muzzle, ejector housing and forward edges of the cylinder. The trigger guard, grip strap and back strap have moderate handling wear. The frame has most of the casehardened finish on the sides and protected areas with silvering on the recoil shield and top strap. The hammer retains 50% of the bright niter blue finish. The grip is very good with sharp rack numbers and scattered minor handling marks and scratches. The markings are clear. The action is crisp, but the hammer will not hold at half-cock. Documented New York Militia Cavalry and Artillery single actions are scarce and desirable variations on the Colt Single Action Army revolver.
