New England School Percussion American Long Rifle This rifle dates to around the 1830-1840s and has a period converted "W&G CHANCE/BIRMINGHAM/WARRANTED" lock with light engraving. William Chance & Son were Birmingham merchants and are known to have had offices in New York and to have supplied guns for the American Fur Company. The barrel is unmarked and has traditional blade and notch sights. It has checkering on the wrist, New England school patch box with simple engraving, similarly engraved toe plate and buttplate, and a shallow cheekpiece. Manufacturer: Kentucky Model: Percussion BBL: 42 1/2 inch octagon Stock: walnut Gauge: 60 Finish: blue Grips: Serial Number: NSN Class: Antique Condition: Very good. The barrel and lock have dark brown patina and mild pitting. The brass has attractive aged patina. The buttplate and patch boxes have pieces absent. The rear ramrod pipe is loose. The stock is fair and is missing the wedges and has the front 6 inches of the forend absent, flash wear at the breech, chipping at the toe, and mild scratches and dings.
