New England Flintlock Militia Musket Dated1836 This musket is marked "J. COOPER" on the center of the lightly engraved lock and has "P", "M", "LH", and "1836" stamped on the left side of the barrel at the breech. The barrel also has a bayonet stud that doubles as a front sight. The stock has civilian style furnishing including no provision for a sling and is checkered at the wrist. New England militia muskets commonly have the latter. Many militia arms were built using surplus military barrels mated to civilian stocks and parts. Joseph Cooper was an importer in New York City from 1831 to 1851. The brass has dark aged patina. The stock is fine with mild scuffs, scratches, and dings. Mechanically fine.
