[Natural History] Audubon, John James. King Duck

London: R(obert). Havell, 1835. Hand-colored engraving with aquatint and etching, on J. Whatman watermarked paper, dated 1835. Engraved, printed, and colored by Havell, after a painting by Audubon. Repaired small closed tears and small losses along edges; uneven mat burn; light soiling and spotting along margins. In mat and in frame. 25 1/2 x 38 1/4 in. (648 x 978 mm). Low, p. 150

A handsome example of Audubon's depiction of a King Duck, currently known as a King Eider, plate CCLXXVI from his Birds of America (London, 1827-38). "Painting and plate depict a male, left, on a rock, and a female, right, on the ground. The scene is a beach with two razor clams, sea behind, and massive dark cliffs rising up on the right. Audubon wrote in Ornithological Biography that on his arrival in Labrador in June, 1833, most of the King Eider had moved further north. He made no mention of collecting or painting the species. It may have been painted in Boston." (Low)
