Native American, Archaic era, ca. 3000 BCE – 1000 CE. A ground and polished stone axe head, or hammer maul, worked from a dense green-gray igneous or metamorphic stone. The tool is fully grooved, encircled by a continuous channel that would have seated a bent wooden haft lashed in place with cordage or sinew. One end tapers to a working bit while the opposite poll is broad and rounded for percussive use. The surface retains its original pecked-and-ground finish with natural mineral banding visible throughout. Size: 3" W x 5" H x 1.6" D (7.6 cm W x 12.7 cm H x 4.1 cm D).
