South Asia, Northeastern India to Burma, Naga (Konyak) culture, ca. mid-20th century CE; Central Asia, Tibet, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A vibrant multi-strand Naga necklace composed of hundreds of orange glass seed beads strung on cotton threads, with braided terminals and a loop clasp made from a 1941 Indian Anna coin. A later addition includes a cotton thread adorned with various brass, silver, and iron ornaments from neighboring Indian and Himalayan cultures, along with a small green-dyed bone ear plug or button - none of which are original to the necklace. Among the attached elements is a silver-cadmium medallion depicting a solar deity (Surya), not recommended for wear due to cadmium content. Also included is a Tibetan mechag (or chuckmuck) leather fire pouch with brass fittings and an iron striker, traditionally used for carrying flint (not included). A Naga trophy head pendant featuring five stylized heads is present, though likely not originally part of the necklace. Size of necklace: 23" L (58.4 cm); striker pouch: 3" L x 2" W (7.6 cm x 5.1 cm)

Provenance: ex-private San Pedro, California, USA collection
