Musical Automaton Clown Playing Guitar by Leopold Lambert, c. 1912
Modeled as an elegant clown seated upon a turned wood stool, with papier-mâché head decorated with dragonflies and beetles, original paint, fixed blue paperweight eyes, two-color mohair topknot, bisque hands holding painted wood guitar, on velvet-covered base with open-spring movement driving four cams and a (later) two-airs-per-turn musical movement of the correct type, dressed in gold satin costume and green silk jacket trimmed with lace and beads, ht. 22 in. (56 cm). With steel key monogrammed "LB". – The clown musician strums with his right hand while raising the neck of the instrument in his left, leaning back and forth on his stool, crossing one leg and then lifting both together as he bends his head in concentration, looks to the left and right as though surveying his audience and then saucily sticks out his tongue! – Literature: Bailly, "Automata, the Golden Age", pp. 181, 351; Auction Team Breker, 26 May 2012, Lot 716 for a similar piece. – A very handsome example of a classic Lambert automaton with complex series of motions, in good working condition.
