[Motor Racing] [Indianapolis 500] Bretzman, Charles F. Panoramic photograph of the Main Grandstands and Pits, 3rd Annual 500 Mile International Sweepstakes Indianapolis Motor Speedway May 30, 1913

Indianapolis Motor Speedway, May 30, 1913. Panoramic photograph by Charles F. Bretzman; signed in negative bottom right “CIRKUT Photo / By C.F. Bretzman / INDPLS / No. 13-E”. Wear along edges and surface, with some loss; scattered soiling; loss in bottom left corner. Approximately 48 x 9 in. (1,219 x 229 mm). In mat and unexamined out of frame.

Charles F. Bretzman (1867-1934) was a portrait and commercial photographer in Indianapolis, Indiana, and the first official photographer of the Indianapolis 500. The first "500" was held two years prior to this photograph, on Tuesday, May 30, 1911. The 1913 race depicted here, was won by French driver Jules Goux, the first foreign-born, and first European winner of the race. His margin of victory of 13 minutes, 8 seconds (approximately seven laps) over second place Spencer Wishart still stands, as of 2026, as the largest margin of victory in Indianapolis 500 history.
