1779 Dated East India Company Officer's Flintlock Fusil by Moore The vast majority of the 1770s dated East India Company flintlock muskets are the large .75 caliber also used by the British military in the period and have standard bayonet studs that double as the front sights and were used by the company's private military. This example by Daniel Moore (active from the 1750s until around his death in 1802) is a smaller caliber, has a blade front sight, small bayonet stud under the barrel, a smaller brass forend cap, a more slender build overall, and a silver thumb plate indicating it was made for use by an officer. .65 and .69 caliber fusils were used by British military officers in the period. Fusils began to replace officers' traditional polearms during the French & Indian War and were common by the American Revolution. It has the EIC bale mark, "MOORE," and "1779" on both the lock and the barrel. The underside of the lock is marked "BW." The barrel also has Moore's hallmark between the London private proof and view marks. Manufacturer: British Model: Flintlock Musket BBL: 37 1/8 inch round Stock: walnut Gauge: 69 Finish: bright Grips: Serial Number: NSN Class: Antique Condition: Fair. The barrel and refinished lock have dark brown patina, moderate pitting, and mild oxidation with the touch hole having been enlarged in diameter giving the appearance of reconversion. The brass and silver have aged patinas. The rear sling swivel and most of the front sight are gone. The stock is very good as lightly sanded and re-oiled and has some small dents and scratches. Mechanically needs work; there is no tension on the frizzen from the frizzen spring, but it is otherwise mechanically fine.
