One of the all time grand Sci-Fi "classics" of the 1950's was "The Mole People" (1956), which actually has us believe that the premise of the film is based on fact. So much so that they had "Our Mr. Sun" professor Dr. Frank Baxter actually give a ten minute lecture at the beginning of the film talking about the hallow earth theories which would explain how a completely different civilization of humanoids could live deep in our planet! Thus starts the story of archaeologists (including a very recognizable Hugh Beaumount just one year before he became America's favorite father in "Leave It To Beaver"), who, while on a expedient, end up deep underground facing a race of Sumerian albinos who keep mutant "mole men" as slaves to harvest their man food source, mushrooms. Of course the slaves revolt, and by the end, as is always the case, as our heroes escape, the entire underground world collapses. Of course the highlight of the "grand opera" of a film were the Mole People themselves. They are forever stamped in our collective nightmare conscience since a great deal of the tiny $200,000 budget went to legendary creature make-up artist Jack Kevan to create the masks and Mole People heads. Kevan's career went all the way back to "The Wizard of Oz", and continued through other classics such as 'Creature From The Black Lagoon", "The Incredible Shrinking Man", and "Man Of A Thousand Faces". He created the design for the extremely iconic bug-eyed tri-lipped Mole faces, as well as crafting both the masks that allowed the sideways lips to open and close, and the heads used on dummies for the important sequences were Mole People are both sucked into the ground, and popped back up to attack. This is one of the Mole heads used for these sequences. Cast from the original mold in hard latex it is filled with industrial foam rubber to keep its shape during the stunt sequences. It comes from the personal vast collection of Jerry Neeley, well-known film historian, collector and owner of the famous "Jerry's Video" in Los Feliz, CA. Customers, collectors and throngs of industry people would come from miles to talk to Jerry, whose knowledge and memory were encyclopedic. This infamous Sci-Fi treasure comes with a Letter of Provenience from Jerry Neely's widow and co-owner of his various video and memorabilia shops. (Mole People Stunt Head is approx &'x12"x10". )
