Moe Howard ALS "I am writing my autobiography… the title 'I Stooged to Conquer'", With Signed Promotional Photo
ALS

An autograph letter from Moe Howard (1897-1975) to one John Ewaniuk, a lifelong fan of The Three Stooges. 1p, measuring 5.5" x 8.5", Los Angeles, CA, July 26, 1974. Signed at conclusion as "Moe", the comedian discusses his autobiography, tentatively titled 'I Stooged to Conquer', and shares his opinion on fellow actor Lou Costello. Accompanied by its original mailing envelope, postmarked July 27, 1974, and together with a 7" x 5.25" promotional photo inscribed in Moe's hand: "Sincerely, The 3 Stooges/ To our special friend John." Exhibits flattened letter folds and minor handling wear throughout. Envelope shows expected age toning, with intermittent tearing and soiling present. Else, near fine.

In part:

"The T-shirts that Larry's brother was distributing were the first. Mr. Maurice gave him a 6 months exclusive but they were of a cheap quality. I may decide to put out some real nice ones of a good quality, if I do I will promote them on T.V. myself. I am writing my autobiography and have been for about 10 months, the title 'I Stooged to Conquer'. There will be loads of photos in it. I expect to have it completed in early 1975. I believe I wrote you… that I disliked Lou Costello and why."

Moe's autobiography would remain incomplete at the time of his death in May 1975. His daughter, Joan Howard Maurer, went on to finish her father's book and published it in 1977 under the title 'Moe Howard and The Three Stooges'. While some of the dates and incidents are portrayed differently than in other books since published about the Stooges, Moe's autobiography nevertheless offers interesting insight into their career from his point of view. The book was later re-released in 2013 with its original name, 'I Stooged to Conquer'.
