MINI
On August 26, 1959, the British Motor Corporation (BMC) unveiled its revolutionary model. In the context of the Suez crisis, the group wanted a car with low fuel consumption, small size and large space. As early as 1962, only three years after its launch, the MINI exceeded the annual production output of 200,000 vehicles. The design, conceived by MINI inventor Alec Issigonis in the mid-50s, was simple and revolutionary. He turned the motor by 180 degrees, fitted it across instead of lengthwise and let it power the front instead of the rear wheels. Thus an extremely short, relatively spacious and very affordable four-seater was possible. The Queen driving through Hyde Park with Issigonis at the wheel of a MINI went a long way to present the cheap small car in the proper light. The efforts of John Cooper successfully helped the MINI to gain reputation as a rally car. The MINI celebrated a veritable triumphal procession through different rally events and nearly scored a hat-trick in the years 1964 to 1966 at the Monte Carlo Rally, had it not been denied its victory in the last year due to illicit halogen auxiliary headlights. As production in ceased 2000, circa 5.4 million MINIs had beens produced.
