East Asia, Japan, ca. mid 20th century CE. A stoneware tanuki figure in the classic Shigaraki tradition - wood-fired with natural ash glaze, flame markings, and coarse clay texture. The tanuki, an anthropomorphized raccoon dog, is a symbol of good luck and prosperity in Japanese folklore, and ceramic figures like this one are traditionally displayed outside shops and restaurants as good luck talismans. This example follows the standard iconography: straw hat, protruding belly, and oversized scrotum. Hollow, with a large opening at the crown of the hat and at the base. Size: 7" W x 10" H x 6" D (17.8 cm W x 25.4 cm H x 15.2 cm D)
