Prince Tati, known variously as Henrik Schlubach Carr and George Hendrik "Tati" Schlubach, was born in Hamburg, Germany in 1911, the son of merchant Herman Edgar Schlubach and Lizzy (Esther) Carr and a great-grandson of Queen Pomare of Tahiti. Educated in Germany, Holland, and England, he came from the prominent Schlubach & Co. trading family, whose story is recounted in Norman Hall's book The Far Land about his Tahitian relatives. A designer, inventor, and architect, he worked for several years with the Chicago architect David Adler before moving in 1937 to Taxco, Mexico, where he settled on a ranch near Taxco el Viejo and later became known locally as "Prince Tati," a cultivated beekeeper, patron, and bon vivant. In Taxco he became part of the celebrated artistic circle that included William Spratling, Héctor Aguilar, Valentín Vidaurreta, Antonio Castillo, and Hubert Harmon, and later married the American textile artist Sheila Hicks. His exquisite sterling silver flatware and decorative designs, often inspired by traditional Taxco motifs, reflect his role as a sophisticated designer, patron, and tastemaker in mid-century Mexican silver and design.
