Rare Mauser Model 1896 Small Ring Hammer Broomhandle Semi-Automatic Carbine This is an excellent and rare example of a Mauser Model 1896 small ring hammer Broomhandle carbine. This version was the final form of the Model 1896 Carbine. These were designed as a lightweight substitute rifle intended to compete with the DWM Luger carbines. The top of the chamber is roll-stamped "WAFFENFABRIK/MAUSER/OBERNDORF A/N," and the right side of the frame has "WAFFENFABRIK MAUSER/OBERNDORF A. NECKER." They had 15 3/4 inch long barrels that were fitted with ramp front sights with drift-adjustable blued bead front sights and tangent rear sights that were graduated from 50-500 meters. The full serial number (949) is visible on the left side of the chamber, the lower left side of the frame, the left side of the stock attaching piece, the bolt, hammer, and trigger group. The top of the rear of the bolt is stamped with a double "Crown/U" firing proofmark. The European walnut stock and forearm have a varnish finish. The stock has a black checkered hard rubber buttplate embossed with the Mauser monogram. Sling swivels are fitted on the forearm and detachable stock. These carbines have a rust blue barrel and receiver with a bright bolt and rear sight face, a casehardened small ring hammer, niter blue trigger, extractor, rear sight slide, bolt stop, safety lever and stock attaching piece. The Small Ring Hammer Carbine was a limited production firearm and is considered one of the more desirable Mauser Model 1896 pistols. Manufacturer: Mauser Model: Small Ring Hammer-Carbine BBL: 15 3/4 inch round Stock: walnut Gauge: 7.63 mm Mauser auto Finish: blue Grips: Serial Number: 949 Class: Curio & Relic Long Gun Condition: Excellent with 95% plus of the original blue finish overall and only edge and high spot wear and some minor finish loss around the edges of the floor plate, trigger guard, and lower rear edges of the frame where you grasp the pistol. The various smaller parts retain 90% of their nitre blued finish. The stock and forend are both in very fine condition with a nice, original, light colored walnut finish showing minor handling marks, scratches, and light pressure dents on the sides from actual use and a couple of nicks along the left side of the otherwise very fine buttplate. Mechanically excellent.
