"An excellent book about an extremely complex man. A strong work of scholarship, with rarely a page without a footnote. Cole knows what he is talking about. But this is not a dry academic treatise. The book is as clear and as interesting a presentation of Van Buren’s life as you will find. Van Buren is a difficult man to write about. His combination of trying to please every side in an argument, his highly social and congenial personality, his bare-knuckled attempts at times to maneuver a situation for his own or his party’s benefit, makes one askwho was this guy? He comes across at times, as a coward, someone who manipulates situations or hides from them so he does not have to take a side. Other times he looks like a brilliant politician superb in the art of compromise who is out for the good of his party and himself. Very few times does he take a clear position, e.g. on slavery later in his life—but even that subsequently tends to be compromised. Van Buren thought that political parties were the future of America and he did everything he could to form them, especially the Democratic Party as it existed in pre-Civil War America. Cole does an outstanding job of explaining all this to the reader."
