MARCO CELOTTI
Italian American, 1937–2015

Oil on board
Signed lower right. Painting of a lone figure standing in an arched doorway, caught between a dark interior and a pale townscape beyond, with a ghostly orange silhouette hovering behind him. The muted greens and warm reds create a tense, haunting atmosphere suggesting transition or uncertainty. Framed. Not examined out of frame.

  • Provenance: ARTIST PROFILE: Marco Celotti (1937–2015) was an Italian American artist born in Zambia who was raised and educated in Italy and South Africa before immigrating to the United States, where he settled in Pennsylvania. Entirely self-taught, he worked across multiple disciplines — painting in oil and watercolor in a Neo-Expressionist style, and sculpting in ceramic and stoneware. His figurative sculptures, created primarily around 1970, are characterized by their highly animated, storytelling quality, and his large ceramic masks — often compared to Venetian carnival masks — were acquired by Manhattan collectors at New York art fairs as early as the 1970s. He also exhibited at New York City's Washington Square Outdoor Art Exhibition in the late 1980s. Among his recognitions were the Premio D'Arte 2002 (Diploma of Merit), the Premio Finlay Italiana 2003, and the Premio Nazionale Fondazione Mazzotti 2002.
  • Dimensions: Sight (as matted): 23 x 17 inches; frame: 32 x 25 inches
  • Medium: Oil on board
