[Maps & Atlases] [New York] Maerschalk, Francis. Early Manuscript Map of the Bloomingdale Road

New York, 1763. Manuscript map in ink on vellum by Francis Maerschalk, inscribed by him in bottom right, "Surveyed July 5th 1763 / by Fran Maerschalk / & Laid Down by A Scale of 4 Chains to an Inch". Showing the Bloemendaal Road (Bloomingdale, now Broadway), as well as the Boston Post Road and Cross Road, in current day Murray Hill in Manhattan. Inscribed on verso, "Inclenburgh Lots / 9th Ward", additional manuscript on same, "Path of the Bloomingdale & Kingsbridge Roads to the Cross Road by Maerschalk 1763". Scattered small creasing; small loss in bottom right corner, closed tear above same repaired on verso; small remnants of removed paper at bottom right; scattered soiling; old ink stamp on verso, modern ink notations on same.

A very early manuscript map of the upper reaches of Inclenberg, Manhattan, in present day Murray Hill. Showing where Bowery Lane diverges into the Bloemendaal Road, commonly known as Bloomingdale Road (present day Broadway), to the northwest, and the Post Road, also known as the Boston Post Road, to the northeast. The land depicted here is shown on Bernard Ratzer's 1766 plan of New York City, and is the site of Robert Murray's manor house, a prominent Scots-Irish merchant, who is listed in manuscript in the present map. "Inclenberg" is Dutch for "beautiful hill" and eventually became known as Murray Hill. The land is divided into numerous plots, listing various individuals, including John Aslop, Jacobus Van Zandt, John Bookman, Isaac Martin, Hugh Hughes, Obadiah Wells, Caleb Hyatt, et al. The land is centrally divided by a "Middle Road" and divided in the north by a "Cross Road".

Francis Maerschalk (d. 1776) was a long-time city surveyor for colonial New York, appointed in 1733. He surveyed much of the city during his lifetime, issuing the Maerschalk plan in 1755.
This lot is located in Philadelphia.
