Mandolin Musical Box with Tune-Sheet by J. Howard Foote, c. 1865–70
No. 6121, playing "Under the Snow" by Evans, "Maritana" by Wallace and 4 operatic airs by Meyerbeer, Rossini, Flotow and Bellini (Gamme No. 4075), with 122 teeth in comb (complete), mandolin groups of up to 4 teeth, tune-sheet with monogram "H.F., N.Y. & C." (incomplete) and retailer's label: "Henry Gautschi & Sons, Manufacturers, 1030 Chestnut Str., Philadelphia", in burr-walnut-veneered case with canted corners, original finish, tulipwood banding and inlaid lid, width 25 ½ in. (65 cm), cylinder 13 in. (33 cm), lid edges split, one treble tip replaced, good restored playing condition. A beautifully arranged musical box with deep tone and full volume. – Literature: H.A.V. Bulleid, "Musical Box Tune Sheet, Second Supplement", p. 39, figure 315. Bulleid illustrates a similar tune-sheet on a musical box retailed by J. Howard Foote of New York and Chicago in around 1868. – The style of the present musical box suggests B.A. Bremond as the most likely manufacturer and serial number 6121 corresponds to Bremond's numbering during the mid-1860s.
