They are of the earth, they are like it. An obstacle in their way can make or break them. They are continually searcching for something whether they like it or not. They believe in manna, and if they find only snow, their former belief does not desert them. Their best-remembered moments are not always happy, but they know -- who doesn't -- that to-morrow may hold all that has up to now been withheld." (Text from the front flap of the dust jacket)

This book is from the library of Leroy Truman Goble, a minor figure in the Chicago literary renaissance of the 1920's. Goble was friendly with the likes of Sherwood Anderson and Ben Hecht. He was also a photographer and artist, although he seems to have worked in the fledgling advertising in Chicago during that time.
